For Sale: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS in Rochester, Minnesota for sale in Rochester, MN

1 of 50
Vehicle Description Genuine documented 1970 Chevelle Super Sport SS 396/375hp L78 Convertible.
1 of 8 known to exist with only 2 being automatics, we have both automatics at our shop for sale currently.
This one has owner history going back to day 1 and is documented with its original factory build sheet, previous titles, original time slips and an odometer disclosure.
This is a very special Chevelle loaded with options from the factory and used as a drag car from new thus remaining in excellent condition and having only 17,306 original miles since new.
The car was restored in 2008 and has been collector maintained since and presents well showing very little aging (it could use a good cleaning underneath).
Obviously being a previous race car it doesn't retain its original engine or transmission any longer but does sport a CE replacement 512 block LS6 engine which was same as they installed back in December of 1969.
The transmission is a correct replacement out of another L78 Chevelle built 2 days before this car as is the carburetor, heads and torque converter it still retains its original CKF code 12 bolt rear end.
It is finished in its original colors of Forrest green with white Super Sport stripes and a white top.
The paint and body are exceptionally nice and show great.
The interior was recovered in its original Ivory colors and shows very well.
Originally sold new at Carl Schmidt Chevrolet in Perrysburg, OH and used as a dealer demonstrator until being sold to its first owner Dale Sheeks who raced the car from new and then sold it to Wade Gainer who raced the car under the Smith, Gainer and Batterson name with Fred Smith at the wheel.
The engine was built by Truppi-Kling the same engine builder who built the famous Ray Allen LS6 Chevelle convertible.
This Chevelle won the winter nationals in 1975 and held records in NHRA and IHRA.
It is also featured on the cover of the August 1975 Super Chevy magazine and the cover of the Chevy Bible.
It was purchased by David Ellis in 1978 with 5,281 original miles.
Mr.
Ellis commissioned a complete restoration in 2008 and continued to own the car until 2014 when it was sold to Robert Tyler who put it into his collection and owned the car until 2019 when its current owner acquired it.
The car runs and drives great, all the gauges, lights, top, windows, radio etc work.
It is a very nice car granted it wasn't restored with all NOS parts but with minimal effort this car could be made more correct with the addition of original wheels, exhaust and trinket stuff.
I can say without a shadow of a doubt this is the BEST 1970 Chevelle L78 Convertible you will find for the money period! These cars have been trading hands for over $200k as of late with a couple reaching that $300k
mark.
This Chevelle presents very well, runs and drives great and as far as collectability it checks the boxes.
